Sure, why not? Puppets are popular, cats are even more so. It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that there are people making cat puppets. And making videos of the results.
Here’s a quick survey of what’s out there. The good, the bad, and the really, really OMG WHY DID I WATCH THAT?
Let’s start here:
Who’s more annoying, the person operating the puppet, or the person who had the idea to post the video?
Wait, don’t go away. It gets better! I promise!
OK, the cat is kind of creepy, edging into the feline equivalent of the uncanny valley. On the other hand, it uses a Journey song. Face it, Journey is on the “Guilty Pleasures” playlist of every American who grew up in the 80s. And big bonus points for the real cat checking up on things at the 0:15 mark.
Then there’s Kitty Gaga’s “Puppet Face”, a parody of Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face”.
Cute idea, but it just doesn’t hold up for the over-three-minute run time. It’s not a complete loss, but definitely should have been trimmed by about 50%. I loved the eyebrow washing bit, though.
Anyone remember “Numa Numa” from back in the dark days of 2004?
Cat puppets do (thus proving that cat puppets are just as evil as real cats).
Moving away from music for a moment, if you have any desire to make your own cat puppet videos–or even put on live shows–you could do far worse than to pick up Steve Axtell’s Alley Cat puppet:
Of course, if you think just buying a pre-made puppet is cheating, how about putting together a kit?
I’d suggest turning off the sound and turning on the subtitles to make this a little less painful.
Better yet, skip that video entirely and check out this one, which will help you construct a cat finger puppet from scratch:
Or, if you really want to get back to basics, how about an origami cat puppet?
Speaking of making your own cat puppet, did you know that William Shakespeare first wrote “Hamlet” as a cat puppet show? It’s true!
I think we all can agree that the rewrite was a good idea.
OK, back to the music.
“Shiny Teeth” is a glorious, low budget effort. How can you resist a fat cat with a mustache? The fact that the cat doesn’t even have teeth just makes it better.
Some people have, well, interesting ideas of what a cat puppet is.
My apologies on this first one. Despite a lot of looking, I couldn’t find it on a site that supports embedding.
And then there’s Lauren and her cat puppet…
I’m going to leave you with this. I warned you that there would be some OMG WHY DID I WATCH THAT content, remember? This is it. It’s also seriously NSFW. Do NOT watch this at work. And be afraid: the creators threaten that it’s the first of a series of films. (Look, I had to include it for completeness, but I promise you that we’ll all be much happier if you skip it.)
